Wildlife Encounters in Maui Waters and on the Island
Humpback Whales — The Annual Migration
From December through April, North Pacific humpback whales migrate to Hawaii's warm waters to give birth and nurse their young. Maui's South Shore — particularly the Auau Channel between Maui and Lanai — is their primary gathering ground and among the most regarded whale-watching locations in the world. You can literally watch humpbacks breach from Wailea's beach path. Whale watching cruises operate from Ma'alaea Harbor throughout the season. → Pacific Whale Foundation
Hawaiian Green Sea Turtles (Honu)
Hawaiian green sea turtles are a protected species and a beloved presence on Maui's reefs and beaches. They are commonly seen while snorkeling at Turtle Town (near Nahuna Point), Five Caves, and along the Wailea coastline. Never touch, approach within 10 feet, or disturb resting turtles on the beach — it is illegal and harmful.
Hawaiian Monk Seals
The Hawaiian monk seal is one of the most endangered marine mammals on Earth. Maui residents occasionally encounter them resting on beaches — they haul out to rest for hours or days and must not be disturbed. If you see one, give it wide space and report the sighting to NOAA. → NOAA Monk Seal Hotline
Maui Ocean Center
The Maui Ocean Center in Ma'alaea is a dedicated marine experience focused on Hawaiian species — a 750,000-gallon open-ocean tank with a walk-through acrylic tunnel surrounded by sharks, rays, and Hawaiian reef fish. Essential for families and anyone who wants to understand the ocean ecosystem surrounding the island. → mauioceancenter.com
Maui Humane Society
The Maui Humane Society is the island's primary animal shelter and adoption center. If you are moving to Maui and considering adding a pet, adoption here supports local animals and the organization's vital community work. → mauihumanesociety.org
Lanai Cat Sanctuary
A unique institution on the island of Lanai — a 25-acre sanctuary housing over 500 cats in a free-roaming outdoor environment. Accessible via ferry from Maui, the sanctuary is a one-of-a-kind experience that has become a beloved destination for animal lovers visiting Lanai. → lanaicatsanctuary.org
Jolanta's Feedback
When I paddle, I see turtles from time to time — they pop their heads up right next to the canoe. It is actually riveting the first time it happens.
