Tennis on Maui: Courts, Clubs, and Where to Find a Game

Maui Has Serious Tennis Infrastructure

Year-round outdoor play, professional instruction, well-maintained facilities, and free county courts across the island. Whether you are a competitive club player or a casual hitter, Maui has a court for you.

Wailea Tennis Club — South Maui

Eleven courts — a mix of hard and Plexipave surfaces — in the heart of Wailea. Professional instruction, ball machines, round-robins, and clinics throughout the week. Day passes are available for non-resort guests, making it accessible regardless of where you are staying or living. The facility is well-maintained, well-shaded where possible, and offers a complete tennis experience including a pro shop and practice areas. → waileatennis.com

Kapalua Tennis Garden

Ten courts at the Kapalua Resort in West Maui, set against the backdrop of the West Maui mountains. Often cited as a striking tennis setting with ocean and mountain views. Professionals on staff, clinics and lessons available year-round. Primarily serves resort guests but day access is available.
Location: Kapalua Resort, West Maui

Four Seasons Resort Maui at Wailea

The Four Seasons does not maintain on-property tennis courts. Guests are shuttled to the Wailea Tennis Club at no charge for tennis play, with the resort coordinating reservations.

Mākena Tennis Complex — No Longer Public

The former Mākena Tennis Complex at the old Maui Prince/Makena Beach & Golf Resort is no longer accessible to the public. The site was absorbed into the private Makena Golf & Beach Club run by Discovery Land Company. Court access is now restricted to club members and their guests.

Free Public Courts — Maui County

Maui County maintains public tennis courts at several parks — no reservation required, no fees, first-come basis: → mauicounty.gov/parks

  • Kalama Park, Kihei — Courts alongside beach park amenities
  • War Memorial, Wailuku — Central Maui courts, sometimes with organized play
  • Lahaina Civic Center — West Maui free courts
  • Hana Ball Park, Hana — East Maui courts for remote area residents

Times to Play: A Local Guide

Early morning (before 9am) and late afternoon (after 4pm) offer the most comfortable conditions. Midday sun and UV index in Maui are intense — playing at peak heat is uncomfortable and potentially dangerous for prolonged sessions. Trade winds pick up most afternoons and can significantly affect play on exposed outdoor courts; indoor or well-sheltered courts are preferable when winds are strong.

Finding a Game

The Wailea Tennis Club's round-robins are a popular way to meet local players and find regular partners. For public court play, Kalama Park in Kihei has the most active community of recreational players gathering for informal games on weekday mornings.

Jolanta's Feedback

The Wailea Tennis Club has dedicated courts in South Maui — a significant margin. Day passes are well worth it.
